Assistant Conductor Position, Putnam Chorale

Position Open for Applicants: Putnam Chorale Assistant Conductor

The Putnam Chorale, Jason Tramm Music Director (Carmel, NY) has posted an opening for an Assistant Conductor for the 2024-2025 season.  The assistant conductor (AC) position is an exceptional opportunity for a young conductor looking for hands-on experience to advance their educational, professional, and repertoire-building goals.  The AC will work closely with Music Director Jason Tramm, while assisting a vibrant, well-established community chorus in its 40th year of operation.

The position will provide meaningful experience for an aspiring choral conductor.   The AC is expected to be at all rehearsals and performances, assisting the Music Director (MD) as needed and substituting for the MD as necessary.  Rehearsals are generally Monday, 7:00 to 9:30 PM at Carmel High School, or held nearby during school closings.  (The Initial registration/rehearsal is at 6:30 PM on Thursday, Sept 5.)  Each concert season (fall and spring) includes two or three additional Saturday rehearsals or workshops.

Our fall concerts are December 13, 14, and 15, 2024, in Putnam County venues TBA. Repertoire includes Vivaldi's Gloria, Saint Saens Christmas Oratorio, and works by Ola Gjeilo.  Our spring concerts are April 26, and 27, 2025, also in Putnam County or nearby.

The AC will work with the MD to run sectionals, to prepare pieces to conduct in performance, etc.  The AC will also sing and perform with the chorus when not conducting, both in major concerts and smaller seasonal ensembles.

Responsibilities for the Assistant Conductor

  • Attend all rehearsals and performances, arriving early and allowing time for socializing

  • Lead some sectionals and/or segments of regular rehearsals

  • Conduct in concert (regular and/or ensembles) as the MD requests, filling in during the absence of the MD

  • Sing in appropriate voice section and act as section leader, if assigned by MD

  • Work with the MD to develop programming and make other decisions

  • Meet monthly with MD to review performance

  • Provide a current bio and photo for concert programs

Stipend: $1,000 for each season (fall and spring) prorated to account for scheduled absences.  Fall season runs September thru mid-December, 2024.  Spring season runs January through April, 2025.  Optional summer ensemble work may be offered for additional compensation.  Payment schedule will be arranged for the convenience of the AC and the treasurer.
